Kitchen cleaning advice

With so many places for them to live and thrive, the kitchen really is a germs’ playground. If food isn't cooked, stored and handled properly, and the kitchen isn’t kept hygienically clean, germs can spread and people can quickly become ill.

Domestos can help keep your kitchen spick and span and germ-free. Here is some kitchen cleaning advice to prevent the spread of harmful germs:

  • Use separate chopping boards: to reduce the risk of spreading bacteria, and keep raw meats, seafood and eggs separate. When chopping, plastic boards are a good choice, because they don't scratch easily. Scratches in wooden chopping blocks can host bacteria. Whichever type of chopping board you use, always clean it thoroughly after use with Domestos Multipurpose Thick Bleach.

  • Wash hands thoroughly: wash your hands immediately after you handle  raw meat to stop the spread of germs.

  • Disinfect cleaning cloths and dishcloths: soak them overnight in a diluted solution of Domestos Multipurpose Thick Bleach, and dry them thoroughly.

  • Get into good household hygiene habits: clean bins, taps and cupboard handles regularly with Domestos Multipurpose Thick Bleach.

  • Avoid blockages: pour Domestos Multipurpose Thick Bleach down plugholes and drains on a regular basis to prevent the build-up of residue in your pipes.

Deep clean regularly: wipe down cupboard shelves and doors; wipe down the inside of the fridge and soak its shelves; spray oven cleaner in the cooker and on the door, scrub the top and insides with a sponge; wipe down surfaces and wash the floor. Do this every one or two months to keep your kitchen hygienically clean.

  • Clean your dish sponges: common dish sponges used for just a week in your kitchen may contain harmful pathogens such as salmonella, E.coli and pseudomonas. Soak your dish sponges weekly in a bleach and water solution to kill 99.9% of all germs.

How to degrease your kitchen

If you have a tough grease stain, go for a cream degreaser. They stay on the stain for longer and will dislodge more of the build-up as a result.
