Sanitation don’ts: What not to do when cleaning

Isn't it frustrating when you've just cleaned your shower and you still find grime hidden in the corners? Or perhaps you're getting rid of stains in your toilet bowel and yet, the residue is still left behind, maybe a little lighter if you’re lucky.

It could be that you are missing something.

We get it, sometimes there is just not enough hours in a day to clean, do grocery shopping, ensure the kids are fed, washed and entertained and cook.

However, rushing through your cleaning schedule will not necessarily give you the germ protection results you are looking for.

Here are some cleaning tips for you to consider during your cleaning regime:

Do not mix detergents. Sometimes you may choose to mix bleach with your favourite detergent because you assume that it will be more effective. If bleach is mixed with your detergent that contains ammonia or alcohol it will create a dangerous chemical reaction that releases toxic fumes. These fumes can irritate the skin, eyes and lungs.

Scrubbing stains out of a carpet. Sometimes when we spill food or drinks on our carpet, your first instinct is to scrub as hard and fast as we can. Scrubbing the stain can remove and untwist the carpet fibers and the damage can be easily visible.  Instead of scrubbing as hard as you possibly can, blot the stain with a paper towel followed by a stain remover.

Cleaning windows on a sunny day. Waking up before sunrise on a weekend may be difficult to do. However, if you want your windows to look sparkling new and clean, then washing them before or after the sun shines is a great way to achieve an extra glimmer. If you clean windows while the sun is out, your windows will get dry faster and will look dull and grey. Rather clean them on a cloudy day or just before there the sun rises or sets.

Using more than the recommended amount. You may be under the impression that adding more detergent to your water solution before mopping or wiping surfaces provides a better clean. This theory is unfortunately incorrect. Adding more than the recommended amount may result in a sticky build-up.

Soak when necessary. When using Domestos Lemon Fresh under the rim of your toilet bowel, ensure that you provide enough time for the bleach to clean and disinfect.  The package usually tells you to leave it overnight before flushing. This step is important if you want to achieve the best results. By allowing the bleach to soak into the grime before wiping or flushing, will get rid of germs and tough stains more effectively.

Having good sanitation ensures you and your family remain healthy and your house is germ free.
